Winter Holiday Plants That Are Dangerous for Pets

The holiday season brings beauty—but also risks. Some festive plants can be harmful to our pets if chewed or ingested. Let’s make sure your home is merry and safe.

Cat With Poinsettia

Plants commonly used during winter celebrations that are risky:

  • Poinsettia – mild irritation, sometimes more depending on the variety.

  • Holly and mistletoe – parts are toxic, can cause GI upset, drooling, cardiac issues in large quantities.

  • Amaryllis, lilies – especially dangerous for cats; some lilies cause kidney failure.

  • Christmas tree needles / sap – can irritate mouth, throat; needles may cause punctures or irritation in digestive tract.

What symptoms to watch for:

  • Drooling, pawing at mouth.

  • Vomiting or diarrhea.

  • Decreased appetite or lethargy.

  • More serious: difficulty breathing, heart rhythm changes (rare but possible with certain toxins).

How to protect your pets:

  • Place toxic plants out of reach (high shelves, rooms pets can’t access).

  • Consider artificial versions if you can’t safely display real ones.

  • Clean up fallen leaves or needles immediately.

  • Be careful with plant decor like garlands or wreaths—pets may chew out of curiosity.
