Help Keep Your Pets Safe During the Cold Winter Months

Pets require extra special attention when the weather gets colder.  Keep these tips in mind as youcold_dog.jpg prepare your pet for the wintery months ahead.

1.  Dog and cats should be kept indoors if possible.  If pets are kept outside they need to be provided with a draft free shelter.  Good dog houses are just large enough for the dog to stand and turn around in, but small enough to retain body heat.  Outdoor dog houses that are too large and spacious will not retain heat and leave your pet shivering.  Fill dog houses with warm bedding such as straw to help insulate your pet against the cold.

2.  Outdoor pets will require extra food when the temperature drops.  Their body burns extra calories to stay warm.

3.  Outdoor pets require fresh, clean water at all times.  When the temperature dips, that water dish might freeze, so be sure to remove ice frequently or utilize a heated water dish.

4.  Clean your pet’s feet after going outside.  Many people use salt or other chemicals to melt ice.  Cleaning your pet’s feet keeps them from becoming irritated and limits the risk of your pet ingesting these substances.

5.  Keep your pets on their regular flea, tick and heartworm preventatives during the winter months.  Parasites are still out there waiting to attack your pets, even when it is cold outside.
